35. LIZARD SPEAKS

She sleeps underneath a sea of stars

While night’s stowaways tresspass in her dreams.

I journey across inner tempests

To navigate her through,

To free her from ghosts storming her peace.

I discovered her soul crouched in darkness

Taking refuge in the cave of lost children.

I saw her crying and tearing at her skin,

Scratching at thorns embedded deep in flesh,

Blood and pus oozing out of infected wounds.

I reach out to her, and she turns away,

Knowing I am here to retrieve her

Spirit, breath, and song.

Too frightened to return to her body,

She runs from me as if I am

The stranger

Who grabbed her on the beach

And crumpled her up,

Who threw her in the car like

Paper in a wastebasket,

Who forced himself inside her,

Ripping and tearing the tiny opening

Of her seven-year-old body.

Her only resistance was for her soul

To scramble and fly away,

To watch her child’s testimony

Before a judge from a great distance.

Her existence became numbness and darkness,

A hiding from bearing witness to the sun.

With a shaman’s ceremony of drums

I will bring her home,

Removing the haunting from her flesh,

Opening inner eyes to truth

And leading her out to the light.

I will hold a mirror up

So that she may recognize her radiance.
